Pecilia Velifer, or high-fin mollinsia, belongs to the Gambusian family. Velifer is a fairly large, viviparous fish, reaching 14 cm in the aquarium.
Males are smaller than females, but brighter colored. Their dorsal fin has a sailing shape. These fish have good hearing, sight and smell.
In an aquarium, they prefer to stay in a flock without forming stable pairs. Velifers get along with any peaceful fish.
These fish reproduce as well as other viviparous. After mating, once every two months the female produces up to 120 fry about 7 mm long. Wellipers do not eat their fry.
In order for the fish in the aquarium to reach their maximum size, one individual should have 8-10 liters of water, replaced every week with 30% of the volume. Be sure to take care of aeration and water filtration. The temperature for the content of these peculiarities is 22-25 ºС.
You can feed the fry velifers with any, even monotonous food, but the menu of adult fish should be as diverse as possible. With pleasure they eat washed tubule, coronetra, bloodworms. But besides live food, velifera needs herbal supplements. In general, the nutrition of these fish should be complete and varied.
When designing an aquarium for velifer, it is better to choose dark medium-sized soil and a background of black or dark blue. This will emphasize the color of the fish.
From plants suitable dwarf echinodorus and cryptocoryne Wendta, royal ambulia, Caroline bacopa. It is these plants that grow well in optimal conditions for velifer. These plants are photophilous and participate well in the biological treatment of water, and fish excrement is very useful for their growth.
Under good conditions, velifers live up to 5 years.
